There’s one question that crops up every year, just as summer begins to give way to the first signs of autumn: what should I wear? Whilst it’s true that, given the temperatures, we still fancy something light and airy, it’s equally true that between going back to work and the cool evenings, the need to rethink our wardrobe becomes apparent.

Fortunately, there is a solution, and it lies in a garment we’ve been looking forward to wearing again. We’re talking about light jackets, a versatile and timeless piece that, from late August and throughout September, once again becomes our go-to ally when needed.

They can be worn in the office, over matching suits and light tops, over summer clothes in the evening and on cooler days, and they prepare us for the arrival of the new season. To sum it up in a single word: essentials! Here are our favourite lightweight jackets to wear in late August (and throughout September too).

The blazer that works even with sandals

The blazer is the ultimate classic in any wardrobe for transitioning from one season to the next and, for this very reason, it never goes out of fashion. For late August, we have a wide variety of styles to choose from: short-sleeved and three-quarter-sleeved, unstructured and ultra-lightweight.

Our advice is to opt for soft, comfortable styles to wear over a summer dress, with a midi skirt or simply with jeans and a T-shirt. Relaxed cuts, shoulders that aren’t too structured, and colours such as beige, cream, blue or brown make it much more versatile, suitable even for sunny days in September and October.

The denim jacket: the great comeback of denim

If there’s one jacket that transcends the seasons, it’s the denim jacket. It comes in particularly handy at the end of August because it’s light enough not to look out of place and edgy enough to addcharacter to summer outfits. You can wear it with a long dress, over a skirt, with flowing trousers or simply with a T-shirt and jeans for a total denim look. It’s perfect as early as late August, to wear on cooler evenings.

The shirt that becomes a jacket

The shirt-jacket is the symbol of the transition from August to September. It’s perfect when temperatures simply refuse to drop, but you still need something to cover up in, especially early in the morning and in the evening. Made from cotton, lightweight denim or soft fabrics, it pairs easily with skirts, trousers, shorts and dresses.

The lightweight suede jacket: the first hint of autumn

Suede has been one of the trendiest materials in recent years, as well as a symbol of autumn. A light suede jacket can be perfect as early as September, especially on days when temperatures start to drop. Natural shades, ranging from beige to leather tones and brown, blend perfectly with the new season’s colour palette. Buy one now, start wearing it and show it off all autumn long.
