For years we’ve been torn between mini and long – or rather, very long – skirts, and we’ve done the same this summer to create glamorous, comfortable and super-relaxed looks.Autumn 2026, however, asks us to turn the perspective on its head: the skirt remains the star of the show, but this time it’s all about a specific length – knee-length.
This season’s trends invite us to embrace a bon ton, retro aesthetic, and we’re already in love with it. There’s a clear nod to the wardrobes of the 1950s and 1960s, but it’s reimagined and lightened with modern fabrics and combinations that are anything but traditional.
The result is a skirt that’s elegant, yes, but easy to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe – perfect for anyone who wants a polished look that can be personalised for any occasion. Let’s take a look at this autumn’s must-have styles.
The pencil skirt: the most sophisticated style
If there’s one style that seems tailor-made for the knee-length, it’s the pencil skirt we also saw last spring. Clean lines, a straight silhouette and a slightly fitted cut that flatters the figure. We’ve seen it in suits and office outfits, yet this year it can also be worn on its own and for leisure. Cotton and leather for the first half of autumn, and wool and tweed when the temperatures start to drop.
The pleated skirt: the return of classic elegance
The knee-length pleated skirt evokes a slightly sophisticated schoolgirl vibe, yet one that’s extremely ladylike. But we love it – absolutely love it – especially if, by being daring with our combinations, we move away a little from the schoolgirl look. Try it with an oversized blazer, a loose-fitting jumper or a denim jacket.
The leather skirt and autumn’s edgiest look
Leather is one of the star fabrics of the autumn wardrobe, and knee-length skirts are no exception. Whether in black, brown, burgundy or more unusual shades, this skirt adds character and personality to any look. You can pair it with a shirt, a top or a T-shirt; there are plenty of different ways to mix and match, but they all ensure your outfit won’t go unnoticed.
Denim knee-length skirt: the all-day uniform
Denim is the other fabric which, alongside leather, has returned to dominate this autumn’s trends. We find it in garments, accessories and, of course, in knee-length skirts too. There are loads of styles to choose from: from straight-cut to slightly flared, right through to slightly fitted styles that are a perfect replacement for classic jeans in every way. Paired with a T-shirt and trainers, the look is instantly effortless and perfect for everyday wear; simply swap the T-shirt for a shirt and loafers to create a more sophisticated outfit that’s also suitable for a night out.
